Healthy Route through the Western Trans-Danube, the paradise of the Wellness.

BUDAPEST - GYOR

With a sunny spring day we are greeted in the hall of the Danubius Grand Hotel Margitsziget, by a youth god-looking and pleasant partner of Route. She will be the person that will accompany us in the long itinerary through the Western Trans-Danube. She belongs to the Sales Department of the Central Danubius Hotels Rt. and she is also the responsible for the Spanish market. With her we will share the most interesting adventures, emotions and experiences through the paradise of the wellness.

We begin the Route run on the motorway M1, Budapest-Gyor -Hegyeshalom. First of all, while refueling in the service station, we adquire those "vignetes" or labels of payment that should be exhibited in the windshield. They cost 1900 florins - about 8 Euros - without entering in the city and its have validity is 10 days.

We feel the itinerary short and in less than one hour we are in the toll of the motorway Gyor - Hegyeshalom the exit toward the city of the three rivers, as it is known Gyor, located in the confluence of the Danube and the rivers Raba, Rabca and Mozón and located halfway between Vienna and Budapest.

Before, we took a detour to visit the Abbey of Pannonhalma, declared Patrimony of the Humanity by UNESCO and the oldest religious institution in Hungary.

Running along the motorway nş 82, the abbey is only 21 kilometres from here, in the southeast part of Gyor, the hills of Pannonhalma reflect the geologic past of the area and the Roman establishment that took place in the skirt of those hills. The 4800 hectares of natural patrimony are covered by oaks and acacias and it is a land where the strange plants and species of animals enjoy an hábitat without contamination.

While we consult the local map, somebody asks why the landscape is sown with so many vineyards. This is a right observation if we keep in mind that the region of Pannonhalma, with a thousand years of tradition in the wine-growing, is one of the historical areas of the wine of Hungary.

We went on conversing about the famous white wines of the volcanic hills of the Balaton and the spectacular Great Abbey Benedictine of Pannonhalma can be sighted dominating the lands of Kisalföld. The abbey is more than one thousand years old and was founded by monks brought by the prince magiar Géza, after his convertion to the Christianity in order to carry out his plan of converting the whole country to the western religion.

The monks turned out to be very combative. In the XIII century they resisted the brave Mongolian attack but they could not make anything in front of blockade carry out by the Turks in the XVII century. They transformed the abbey in a mosque taking advantage of its eastward orientation.

Really the complex of buildings of the "central headquarters "of the Benedictine Order of Hungary deserves to be considered Patrimony of the Humanity, it is like a book of art; an illustration converted in living reality, representing the evolution of the european architecture from the Romanesque to the Neoclassicist.

In the esplanade of the Abbey several buses are awaiting for German tourists visiting this magnificent monument. It is worthwhile to dedicate an entire day to see the buildings and the valuable treasures located here, however we were short of time.

In the central square is the Abbot -Asztrik's- statue, he was delegate by the Pope Silvestre II to give to king Esteban I the Saint, the celebrated crown with the inclined cross that today forms part of the shield of Hungary and is a very valuable spiritual legacy for the Hungarian people.

We access to the Church by Porta Spaciosa wich has phenomenal columns of red marble. However, what is most outstanding in the Abbey is its library, with a wise illumination with the help of mirrors reflecting and distributing the solar light. It contains 300.000 volumes, incunabular some of them such as the manuscript of foundation of the Abbey of Tihany, in 1055, the oldest in Hungary and where for the first time appear words in hungarian languaje. From May to December interesting programs of concerts are organized.

BALCONES DE GYOR

We return to Gyor by the same motorway nş 82 toward Hotel Raba where we will have lunch. The hotel is located in the historic centre, at the beginning of Baross Gábor's pedestrian street, with stores, coffees, restaurants and a lively atmosphere.

The Celtic and the Romans were the first ones in settling in Arribona as they named Gyor. Due to its geographical situation the city became the centre of the western trade. It had an turbulent and interesting historical life. San Esteban, the first king of Hungary, had a Episcopal seat, was invaded by the tartars, given as guarantee to the Austrian Káiser, occupied by the Turkish ones and even sieged by Napoleón.

Today, with little more than 130.000 inhabitants, it is the third city of Hungary regarding monuments richness and rewarded with the Europa Prize due to the protection and reconstruction of its Baroque city. Its bet for the tourism of health and well-being leaded to an agreement between the private company and the public sector deciding to build the most modern thermal centre of the region. The Spa has been reinforced with an advanced therapeutic centre of physiotherapy.
