The treatment applyed by the specialists is
known as the "Doctor fish" of KANGAL.
The climatic effect, the selenium concentrations (1.3ppm) in the water and
the therapeutic power of those "thermal fish", are the main factors to
consider the Balneotherapy as an alternative therapy for the treatment of the
illnesses of the skin, in the SPA of Kangal (Turkey).
 The
specialists in dermatology, hydroclimatology and biology of the University of
Istanbul, presented an scientific manifest with the conclusions of the
investigation carried out in patients suffering from psoriasis, using as
treatment method the fish that inhabit the hot springs of Kangal.
This manifest points out that "the psoriasis is a pretty common and
cronic disease and together with numerous studies relative the formation of the
illness are various treatments. However we should keep in mind that the disease
may repeat. And in these cases, the patient's psychological condition is of
great importance.
Since the antiquity, the spas have used effective therapeutic methods for the
treatment of various illnesses. In this sense, the spa is interesting due to its
climate, the fishes and the water used by the patients that suffer from
psoriasis and that have achieved some positive results through the natural
ultraviolet rays, the selenium in high concentrations and the skin cleaning
carried out by those "thermal fishes" in the damaged skin tissues.
Consequently, the Balneotherapy is considered an alternative therapy, in
addition to the traditional medicine, in the treatment of the skin diseases. In
this aspect, due to their treatment factors, the Thermal Baths of Kangal can be
considered internationally of great therapeutic value for the tourism of health."
The manifest is signed by the following specialists:

THE
"DOCTOR FISH"
According to sources of the research contacted by Termas World, the patients
with a chronic illness of the skin like the psoriasis tend to look for help in a
wide range of alternative sources.
The treatment method applyed by the specialists is known as the "doctor
fish" of KANGAL. These fish inhabit waters of hot springs near Kangal, an
small city of Turkey. The springs were discovered in XIX century and they were
opened to the public in 1963.
The research about the fishes and the healing power in patients carried out
by specialists the Dr. Levent Undar, professor associated of the Faculty of
Sciences, Dr. M. Ali Akpinar and Dr. Atilla Yanikoglu of the Deparment of
Internal Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine and Biology Deparment of University
of Cumhuriyet, proved that the selenium presence (1.3ppm) it has been of great
value due to its biological and therapeutic aspects.
The water of the spring with a pH of approximate of 7.2, is isotermal
maintaining a temperature around 35°C right through the year. The water has
some characteristics that allow to be used as hidropinic cure ( drinking water).
The thermal water also benefits the patients suffering from rheumatic
illnesses, neurological disorders (neuralgia, neuritis, paralysis), orthopedic
consequences and traumatológical ( fractures, articulations traumatism and
muscular illnesses), problems gynecological problems and the psicosomátics
disorders (according to the report of Clinic and Institute of Physical Therapy
and Hydrology, Medicine Faculty of the University of Ankara, March 2 1967.
For the researchers of this treatment method, those "thermal fish"
are able to exercise a power of cleaning in the damaged tissues, fundamental for
the patient's improvement, because the flakes removal and the consequently
exposure of lesion to the water and the light of the sun.
The
high selenium level in the water, is considered beneficial in some illnesses. We
should remember that the selenium is a factor that protects the cells against
the effects of free radicals. This can also explain the healing effects of the
water taken as drink or used for gastrointestinal and gynecological disorders.
Specialists of other foreign universities observed as the swimmers were
interested in testing this healing method of "doctor fish ". The good
result of the research obtained by the University of Istanbul with these
patients, awake the interest of other people with neurological and rheumatic
illnesses to visit the hot spring to dive in its pools.
These "thermal fish" belong to the family of the Cyprinidae and
they are adapted to live in a warm environment. They have a mouth finished in
tip and a longitude between 2-10cm. They are covered with relatively big flakes,
and they have from six to eight lateral stains of several sizes irregurlarly
placed.
