The Route of the Spas for the District do Ribeiro

RIBADAVIA, MEDIEVAL TOWN

When passing through villages, we observe the dissemination of the houses and traditional housings of stone, with external stairway that ascends until the row of balconies of the first plant, up the housing and below the stable. In important villages as Arnoia, Ribadavia and Cortegada, the construction is different although the balconies and the galleries continue being the key elements of the Galician architecture: granite walls and roofs of the arab tile. The print of the emigrants returned from Hispanoamérica by the middle of XX century mostly from Venezuela and Argentina, are appreciated in the houses with beraring and palms, surrounded of walls that contain the garden, emparrado and vegetable garden.

Another very characteristic element of the interior Galicia, they are the villages with churches surrounded by small cemeteries where they don't lack the flowers and extremely cares: San Salvador of Arnoia, the Sanctuary do Glass, in Vilanova two Infants, among other that sows reed-maces or Baroque towers, as many other, they gather in a common place the alive and deads. It is the ingrained cult to the deceaseds of the Galician people

Ribadavia and Celanova are the most important villages in the district. The first, capital do Ribeiro, had an important Jewish population and it conserves the structure of its narrow streets in the old part of he city. Here we stop. We greet some compatriots that are to the door of a tavern in the town.

Of the history of this village, without a doubt of the most monumental in Galicia, so much for their Jewish neighborhood as for the magnificence of the ecclesiastical and civil buildings, there are numerous evidences, that of the Phater Samuel Eiján and that of Leopoldo Meruéndano, chronicler of Ribadavia. The illustrious galician writer Otero Pedrayo also pay attention of Ribadavia, that was declared historical-artistic place in 1947.

We continue walking for those paved medieval streets of the old part of the city and remembering those times in which Ribadavia was court of the King García I of Galicia and he inhabited the current lot of Sacred Domingo's convent, been founded in 1254 and the second in Galicia after Santiago. Of this it there is evidence in their old part of the city that remembers us how it was an important Jewish colony.

According to the history books, in 1389, it took place the defense of the village, by the the bourgeoises and Jewish, against the troops of the english Duke of Lancaster. Ribadavia was also the centre of the dominion of the Sarmientos, later of Counts of Ribadavia and Governor of Galicia. These noblemens not very well supported by the population of Ribadavia, they had frequent disputes with the Sotomayor, and the most celebrated in them, Pedro Madruga, it set on fire the village when the town rebelled against Elvira de Zúñiga that had ordered to hang to the deputies of the town.

Far from this historical legacy, today we check as Ribadavia it is the commercial and economic center of the district do Ribeiro of which stand out, naturally, their wine-growing production and an important industry of caskets manufacture. The village is also administrative and judicial center of the district and it has an important element in the service sector: the Tourism.
